Description

The Ostomy Adjustment Scale can be used to evaluate a person with an ostomy following gastrointestinal surgery. It can be used over time to monitor the patient's changes with experience and response to interventions.


 

The instrument consists of 34 statements.

 

NOTE: The basic questionnaire can be used in other medical situations by replacing "(ostomy)".

 

Forward scoring (complete agreement is very positive): 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 15, 18, 21, 22, 28, 29, 32, 33, 34

 

Reverse scoring (strong disagreement is very positive): 3, 6, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 16, 17, 19, 20, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 30, 31

• A 7 point Likert scale would allow a neutral response.

 

score =

= SUM(points for all 34 questions)

 

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 34

• maximum score: 204

• The higher the score, the better the person's perceived adjustment.

 

Performance:

• The Cronbach alpha from the Swedish series was 0.95 indicating good reliability.
