Description

Rao et al reported a list of bleeding events associated with percutaneous coronary interventions. The list was generated by a panel of experts. The study if from the National Cardiovascular Data Registry (NCDR) CathPCI Registry.

Patient selection: percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)

Time frame: occurrence up to 72 hours after the PCI OR before hospital discharge (whichever occurs first). The 72 hour criteria may be more objective since a patient may be discharged prematurely.

Events:

(1) external bleeding from the arterial access site

(2) arterial access site hematoma (see below)

(3) retroperitoneal bleeding

(4) gastrointestinal bleeding

(5) genitourinary bleeding

(6) intracranial hemorrhage

(7) cardiac tamponade

(8) post-procedural hemoglobin decrease >= 3 g/dL (with pre-procedural hemoglobin <= 16 g/dL)

(9) post-procedural transfusion with pre-procedural hemoglobin >= 8 g/dL (exclusion: bypass surgery)
