Berth-Jones and Graham-Brown developed a clinical severity score for patients with atopic dermatitis. The score can be used to monitor the effectiveness of topical therapy over time. It is a predecessor to the SASSAD index (above). The authors were from the Leicester Royal Infirmary in England.
Regions examined: 10
(1) face
(2) neck
(3) abdomen
(4) back
(5) elbows
(6) antecubital fossae
(7) dorsa of hands
(8) palms and wrists
(9) popliteal fossae
(10) feet
where:
• The region on both sides of the body appears to be scored together. This might be a problem if the involvement was asymmetrical.
Findings evaluated:
(1) erythema
(2) excoriation
(3) dryness
(4) cracking
(5) lichenification
Severity of Finding
Points
absent
0
mild
1
moderate
2
severe
3
Leicester score =
= SUM(points for all 5 findings at all 10 regions)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 150
• The higher the score, the more severe the atopic dermatitis.
