The Fukuoka University Crohn's Disease Activity Index (FCI) is intended to provide a comprehensive assessment of disease activity in Crohn's disease. It uses 7 parameters combining subjective and objective observations. It has been found to be useful in evaluating the effect of medical treatment.
Parameters used for activity index:
(1) abdominal pain
(2) abdominal tenderness
(3) complications
(4) C-reactive protein
(5) temperature
(6) diarrhea
(7) body mass index

where:
• The translations for the finding column is my best guess. The parameters are given in the translated abstract.
• I could not translate what was considered to be complications by the authors but these should be similar to that given in the other sections (sinus, fistula, stomatitis, arthritis, etc.)
• C-reactive protein is usually measured in mg/L rather than by "+" reactivity, with normal values < 8 mg/L. Fleck (1995) indicates that a high values are > 200 mg/L. In the implementation I have used the following scheme: < 8 = negative, 8-10 +/-, 11-25 1+, 26-69 2+, 70-112 3+, 113-156 4+, 157-200 5+, and > 200 6+.
• In Table 5, page 2032, both temperature and diarrhea use "<=" when 2 points are being assigned, but context indicates ">=" is more appropriate
• body mass index = (body weight in kilograms) / ((body height in meters) ^2)
FCI =
= (3.5 * (points for abdominal pain)) + (3 * (points for abdominal tenderness)) + (3 * (points for complications)) + (points for CRP) + (3 * (points for temperature)) + (4 * (points for diarrhea)) - (0.4 * (BMI)) + 16
where:
• The constant value of 16 is not given in the translated abstract, but is given in Table 5 and other portions of the article text.
Interpretation:
• minimum score: varies depending on BMI, but could be < 10
• maximum score: varies with BMI, but could be > 46
