Description

The QOLIE-10 (Quality Of Life In Epilepsy) is a brief instrument for screening patients with epilepsy about the impact of the epilepsy on their lives. It is a subset of the questions used in the more extensive QOLIE-89.

NOTE: Permission to use the QOLIE-10 should be obtained from the Professional Postgraduate Services, 400 Plaza Drive, Secaucus, New Jersey. 07094. USA.

Instrument - 10 questions in 3 domains:

(1) epilepsy effects (3): memory, physical effects, mental effects

(2) mental health (3): energy, depression, overall quality of life

(3) role functioning (4): seizure worry, work, driving, social limits

Points are assigned from 1 to 5 based on the frequency or severity during the previous 4 weeks.

QOLIE-10 score =

= SUM(points for all 10 questions)

subscore for epilepsy effects =

= SUM(points for items #4 + #7 + #8)

subscore for mental health =

= SUM(points for items #1 + #2 + #10)

subscore for role functioning =

= SUM(points for items #9 + #5 + #6 + #3)

Interpretation:

• minimum total score: 10

• maximum total score: 50

• The higher the score, the poorer the expressed quality of life.

Performance measures (see text 579-580; Table 3 page 580):

• Pearson correlation for individual items on test-retest: 0.48 – 0.81

• Cronbach's alpha: 0.48 – 0.51

• Role functioning scores were different for patients with mild, moderate and high seizure frequency.
