Description

The Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) can be used to evaluate a patient's concerns prior to undergoing anesthesia. This can help identify a patient who may be anxious or who may need additional information about the procedure. The authors are from the University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands.


 

The instrument consists of 6 statements related to the patient's anxiety or concern about undergoing anesthesia.

subscale for surgery-related anxiety =

= SUM(points for items 1, 2, 4 and 5)

 

Interpretation:

• minimum subscale scores: 2

• minimum combined anxiety component: 4

• maximum subscale scores: 10

• maximum combined anxiety component: 20

• The higher the scores the greater the degree of anxiety or need for additional information.

 

Performance:

• The Cronbach alpha for the combined anxiety component was 0.84 and for the information desire was 0.77.
