Description

A person who abuses a synthetic cannabinoid can become dependent and suffer a withdrawal syndrome if s/he tries to discontinue its use.


 

The synthetic cannabinoids may contain a variety of compounds that may have THC-like, amphetamine-like or other pharmacologic activities. Therefore the withdrawal reaction may share some features of cannabis withdrawal but may have other features.

 

Clinical features of a withdrawal reaction:

(1) The person has a history of daily use of the synthetic cannabinoid, often developing tolerance.

(2) Discontinuation of drug use results in a withdrawal syndrome (below)

(3) The symptoms revert if the person uses the drug again.

 

Clinical symptoms of the withdrawal reaction:

(1) anxiety

(2) tachycardia

(3) nocturnal nightmares

(4) drug cravings

(5) profuse sweating

(6) nausea

(7) tremor

(8) headache

(9) hypertension

(10) myalgias
