Description

Floyed et al developed a screening tool for pediatric patients who have been sexually assaulted. This can triage patients to the Emergency Department or to an alternative assessment area. The authors are from Emory University and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Patient selection: pediatric patient who has been sexually assaulted

The patient should be seen in an Emergency Department if one or more of the following is present:

(1) time since assault <= 72 hours AND sexual contact (oral OR genital to genital OR genital to anal)

(2) genital pain, bleeding, discharge or injury

(3) rectal pain, bleeding, discharge or injury

(4) immediate concern about the patient’s safety

(5) any unrelated emergency medical condition

A patient with a negative screen should have a complete assessment with determination of personal and family needs. This can be done at an appropriate site for the patient and family.

Performance:

• The sensitivity was 100% and specificity 68%.
