Description

Chateau-Degat et al classified the symptoms of ciguatera poisoning into classes. The number of classes experienced by the patient correlated with the duration of illness. The authors are from Laval University Medical Research Center in Quebec and the Institut Louis Malarde in Tahiti.


 

Patient selection: ciguatera poisoning

 

Symptom classes during acute poisoning:

(1) gastrointestinal

(2) neurologic

(3) cardiac

(4) systemic

 

Gastrointestinal symptoms:

(1) nausea and vomiting

(2) diarrhea

 

Neurologic symptoms:

(1) paresthesias

(2) difficulty with cold perception

(3) headache

(4) dental pain

(5) metallic taste

(6) vertigo

(7) instability

(8) lack of coordination

(9) pruritis

(10) hypersalivation

 

Cardiac symptoms:

(1) bradycardia or tachycardia (pulse <= 60 or >= 90)

(2) hypotension or hypertension (systolic blood pressure <= 100 mm Hg or blood pressure > 140/90)

 

Systemic symptoms:

(1) asthenia

(2) myalgia

(3) arthralgias

(4) dysuria

(5) fever

(6) nuchal rigidity

(7) respiratory distress

(8) chills

(9) sweating
