Description

Insects can be a problem inside facilities during certain times of the year. These can be controlled by taking preventive and interventional steps.

Insects are often attracted to sources of food and moisture.

Preventive measures:

(1) Limit food and drink to specific areas.

(2) Keep offices and hallways clean.

(3) Keep food in sealed containers.

(4) Empty waste baskets daily.

(5) Use fresh water to water plants or for cut flowers.

(6) Control areas of moisture and empty containers with standing water.

(7) Inspect rooms for signs of insect activity.

Interventional measures in the event of a significant infestation:

(1) Carefully inspect the area, looking for where the insects are located and how they are getting access to the facility.

(2) Collect samples of each insect type present.

(3) A mild infestation can be controlled by reinforcing preventive measures and with the use of a simple insecticide.

(4) Take steps to seal points of ingress.

(5) A severe or recalcitrant infestation may require the services of a professional who will select the appropriate control agent based on the type of insects and local conditions.

(6) Monitor the effectiveness of the control program.

(7) If an insecticide is used be sure to follow the instructions carefully.
