Description

Exposure to aflatoxins may cause a spectrum of illness. Its causative role may go unnoticed in many cases unless a link is specifically looked for.


 

Conditions that have been associated with aflatoxin exposure:

(1) acute hepatitis (aflatoxicosis)

(2) chronic hepatitis

(3) cirrhosis

(4) hepatocellular carcinoma (hepatoma)

(5) immunosuppression

(6) growth retardation

(7) kwashiorkor or other nutritional problems associated with malnutrition

 

Factors determining the effect of an aflatoxin exposure:

(1) dose level

(2) duration

(3) types

(4) viral hepatitis and other exposures
