Ozone (O3) is a potent oxidizing agent that may be formed naturally or as a result man-made devices. High levels of ozone are present in photochemical smog.
Natural sources of ozone:
(1) high levels of ultraviolet light, especially in the presence of nitrogen dioxide
(2) electrical storms
Man-made sources of ozone:
(1) arc welding
(2) photocopy machines
(3) bleaching
(4) water purification
(5) high-voltage electrical systems
(6) X-ray generators
(7) mercury vapor lamps
