SMOG Readability Score of Educational Material After Translating

Purpose: To estimate the readability of patient education material translated from one language into another using the SOL equations of Contreras et al.

Description

The SMOG formula (see above) for readability can be used to evaluate health education material. The effective SMOG score after translating between 2 languages can be estimated by using the SOL equations determined by Contreras et al. The authors are from Madrid, Spain.


 

Assumptions:

(1) There is systematic bias in the SMOG formula for text in Spanish or French.

(2) English is more readable than French, which is more readable than Spanish.
