Description

A patient with disordered sleep may be at risk for nocturia. A patient with nocturia may have an underlying sleep disorder.


 

Sleep disorders that may be associated with nocturia:

(1) insomnia

(2) sleep apnea syndrome (central, obstructive)

(3) restless legs syndrome

(4) periodic legs syndrome

(5) parasomnia

(6) disorderd sleep secondary to a medical disorder (heart failure, COPD, etc)

(7) disordered sleep secondary to neurological disease (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, etc)

 

The patient may have:

(1) nocturnal polyuria

(2) a problem with bladder storage

(3) a habit of voiding upon awakening, with only volumes passed

 

It is important for the patient:

(1) to record the frequency and volume of urine episodes.

(2) to have a sleep assessment
