Description

A person may develop carbon dioxide poisoning in a number of situations.

Environmental release of carbon dioxide:

(1) "killer lakes" (release of accumulated carbon dioxide from volcanic lakes or under the ocean)

(2) melting of dry ice

(3) release of carbon dioxide from a gas cylinder

Since carbon dioxide is relatively dense the concentration after an environmental release is higher near the ground. Someone above the ground may survive while a person near the ground may not.

Diving or closed space environment:

(1) diving with a rebreather circuit

(2) skip breathing (voluntary hypoventilation) while diving

(3) hard hat diving

(4) being in a caisson, space capsule or other closed chamber
