Description

Certain findings may be evidence of an impending mudslide. If any of these findings are noted, then an immediate review of the risks should be conducted.


 

Selection criteria - both of the following:

(1) in locale at risk for mudslides (see previous section)

(2) intense bursts of rain (> 0.5 inches per hour) after prolonged heavy rains, and/or > 3 inches per day

 

Potential signs of an impending mudslide:

(1) Doors and/or windows stick or jam for the first time or sticking become worse.

(2) New cracks appear in plaster, tile, brick, concrete or foundations or existing ones suddenly become worse.

(3) Outside walls, walks or stairs pull away from the building.

(4) Slowly developing, widening cracks appear on the ground or on paved areas such as streets or driveways.

(5) Fences, retaining walls, utility poles or trees tilt or move.

(6) Underground utility lines break.

(7) Bulging ground is seen at the base of a slope.

(8) Water seaps through the ground surface in new locations.

(9) Ground shifts and slopes downward in one specific direction.
