Description

A man who has had a stroke may experience sexual dysfunction.


 

Common types of sexual dysfunction in men following a stroke:

(1) decreased libido

(2) erectile dysfunction

(3) impaired ejaculation

 

Factors that may contribute to sexual dysfunction:

(1) risk factors for atherosclerotic vascular disease (smoking, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia)

(2) residual paralysis

(3) location of the infarct(s)

(4) concomitant heart disease

(5) concomitant diabetes

(6) concomitant renal failure

(7) age-related decline in performance

(8) depression

(9) drugs used to treat depression

(10) drugs used to treat blood pressure and other cardiovascular risk factors

 

A stroke involving certain parts of the CNS may be associated with certain impairments:

(1) A lesion of the left basal ganglia was associated with a decreased desire for sex.

(2) A lesion of the right cerebellum was associated with impaired ejaculation.

(3) A lesion of the right pons was associated with erectile dysfunction.
