Location is everything when seeking shelter from lightning.
Locations to consider for shelter:
(1) substantially constructed buildings, especially if lightning protected
(2) fully enclosed metal vehicles (cars, trucks, trains, buses, vans, fully enclosed farm vehicles) with windows rolled up and doors closed.
(3) if none of the above are available, seek low ground or depression and take cover in clumps of bushes.
Locations to avoid:
(1) high places, including mountain tops or ridges
(2) open fields
(3) isolated trees
(4) unprotected gazebos
(5) rain or picnic shelters
(6) camping tents, especially those with metal poles
(7) baseball dugouts
(8) communications towers
(9) flagpoles
(10) light poles
(11) bleachers (metal or wood)
(12) metal fences and gates
(13) automobile convertibles
(14) golf carts
(15) rider lawnmowers
(16) non-enclosed farm equipment
(17) bodies of water (lake, river, swimming pool, ocean, etc.)
If inside a building, avoid:
(1) use of the telephone
(2) taking a shower
(3) washing your hands
(4) doing dishes
(5) contact with conductive surfaces with exposure to the outside, including metal doors, metal window frames, electrical wiring, telephone wiring, cable TV wiring, and plumbing
(6) the vicinity of a television set or ham radio equipment
If inside a vehicle, avoid contact with metal or conducting surfaces outside or inside of the vehicle.
