Description

Vasilopoulou et al developed a screening questionnaire to evaluate a child with leg pain for growing pains. The authors are from Penteli Children’s Hospital, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and A. Kyriakou Children’s Hospital in Athens, Greece.


 

Patient selection: child 4 to 7 years of age with leg pains

 

Statements compatible with growing pains – The pain:

(1) is located behind the knee and/or in muscles (thighs, gluteal, calves, soles)

(2) occurs during late afternoon or night

(3) is bilateral

(4) wakens the child at night

(5) resolves spontaneously or after massage of the affected area

(6) occurs in a child who is otherwise well

(1) always affects the same leg.

(2) is still present the next morning.

(3) is persistent and does not resolve.

• maximum score: 9

• A score >= 8 indicates a high probability of growing pains.
