Description

It is important to identify an infant with biliary atresia early so that surgery can be performed as soon as possible. In some countries in Asia where biliary atresia is more common the parents of all newborns are given stool color cards to identify infants who should be screened for biliary atresia.

Goal: To identify an infant with biliary atresia before 60 days of age.

The stool of an infant with biliary atresia may be:

(1) white

(2) pale clay-colored

(3) light yellow

The parents may also notice that the infant is jaundiced.
