Matutes et al developed a scoring system for immunophenotyping of hairy cell leukemia (HCL). The authors are from the Royal Marsden Hospital in London.
Immunostains:
(1) CD11c
(2) CD25
(3) CD103 (integrin alpha E, formerly B-ly-7)
(4) HC2 (hairy cell leukemia-associated antigen)

where:
• HC2 may not be commercially available. CD123 may be substituted.
• CD11c and CD25 are typically very bright in HCL. The score might be modified to capture the staining qualities for these 2 markers.
total score =
= SUM(points for all 4 markers)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 4
• A score of 4 correlates with typical HCL.
• A score of 0 is atypical for HCL.
