Description

Brimacombe and Berry used a scoring system to describe the placement of the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) as visualized using a fiberoptic laryngoscope. This aid the comparison of findings reported from different clinical studies. The authors are from the Royal Perth Hospital in Australia.

Procedure:

(1) Pass a fiber-optic laryngoscope so the tip is just proximal to the mask aperture bars.

(2) The elements that can be seen are described.

(3) Whether or not the mask is functioning is determined.
