Description

Wang et al developed a score for predicting complications after a hepatic resection for a hepatocellular carcinoma caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV). This can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from Sichuan University in Chengdu, China.

Patient selection: hepatic resection for hepatocellular carcinoma secondary to HBV

Outcome: severe complications (Clavian-Dindo Grades III to V)

Parameters:

(1) extent of the hepatic resection

(2) extrahepatic procedure (splenectomy, adrenalectomy, bowel resection, etc)

(3) portal hypertension

(4) ASA status

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 10

• The higher the score the greater the likelihood of severe complications.
