Description

Iino et al developed a score for monitoring patients with eosinophilic otitis media. The authors are from Jichi Medical University in Saitama, Japan.

Patient selection: eosinophilic otitis media

Parameters:

(1) quantity of middle ear effusion (MEE) or otorrhea in left ear, with or without eardum perforation

(2) quantity of middle ear effusion or otorrhea in right ear, with or without eardum perforation

(3) condition of middle ear mucosa in left ear

(4) condition of middle ear mucosa in right ear

(5) frequency of intratympanic administration of corticosteroids in left ear

(6) frequency of intratympanic administration of corticosteroids in right ear

(7) frequency of systemic corticosteroid therapy

(8) frequency of systemic antibiotic therapy

Parameter

Finding

Points

MEE or otorrhea left ear

eardum intact, no MEE

0

eardrum intact, MEE with partial intratympanic aeration

1

eardum intact, mesotympanum totally filled with MEE

eardrum perforation, otorrhea limited to the mesotympanum

1

eardrum perforation, otorrhea extrudes to the external auditory canal

total score =

= SUM(points for all 7 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0 (normal)

• maximum score: 16 (severe bilateral disease)

• The higher the score the worse the eosinophilic otitis media.

• A high score in one ear would overlap with milder bilateral disease. This can be corrected by giving subscores for the 3 parameters specific to each ear.
