Description

Fatigue may be a prominent clinical symptom for a patient with sarcoidosis. This may be associated with disability and a reduced quality of life.

Factors associated with fatigue in a patient with sarcoidosis:

(1) systemic constitutional symptoms with an acute phase reaction (with elevated C-reactive protein and cytokines)

(2) skeletal muscle weakness

(3) exercise intolerance

(4) female gender

(5) pituitary and/or endocrine dysfunction

A patient with sarcoidosis should be asked about fatigue and steps taken to reduce its severity.
