Description

Chemicals used to keep swimming pools safe can be hazardous if stored or handled incorrectly.


 

Types of injury:

(1) inhalation of toxic gas or fumes

(2) chemical burns to skin

(3) chemical splash injury to eyes

(4) ingestion

 

Recommendations for handling and using swimming pool chemicals:

(1) Only use chemicals that are approved for the swimming pool.

(2) Be familiar with each chemical that is used, including the list of ingredients, hazards and storage requirements.

(3) Only someone who has been properly trained should be allowed to handle the chemicals.

(4) Store and handle the chemicals so that they are inaccessible to children and animals.

(5) Store chemicals in the original container whenever possible. Do not put chemicals in unlabeled or mislabeled containers.

(6) Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for storing and handling all chemicals.

(7) Have a chemical spill kit available.

(8) Respond to a chemical spill immediately.

(9) Store chemicals so that they do not mix and do not get wet.

(10) Do not handle chemicals while intoxicated, ill or otherwise prone to error.

(11) Wear appropriate protective equipment when handling the chemicals.

(12) Any equipment being used to measure chemicals should not be used for any other purpose.

(13) Do not add water to liquid chemicals or predisolve solid chemicals (unless done according to the manufacturer's instructions).

(14) Be particularly careful with chemicals that contain chlorine. Do not mix these with each other, with acid or with any other chemical.

(15) Store the chemicals away from flammable materials.

(16) Only handle the chemicals in a well-ventilated area.

(17) Review instructions and chemical labels prior to each use.
