The European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) and American Society for Human Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) sponsored a conference in Rotterdam that developed consensus criteria for the Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS or POS).
Criteria - the presence of both of the following:
(1) The presence of 2 or 3 of the following features:
(1a) irregular menses with oligo- or anovulation
(1b) manifestations of hyperandrogenism (clinical and/or biochemical)
(1c) polycystic ovaries on pelvic imaging studies
(2) exclusion of other explanations
where:
• Serum androgens include testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) and androstenedione.
There are 4 possible combinations that meet the first criteria (1a + 1b, 1a + 1c, 1b + 1c, 1a + 1b + 1c).
