Description

Waisbren et al correlated the risk of surgical site infection (SSI) with the percent body fat. This correlates better with the risk of infection than does the body mass index (BMI). The authors are from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Children's Hospital Boston.

Analysis: percent body fat by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA)

The relationship between percent body fat and the risk of surgical site infection is somewhat linear. The relationship with body mass index and surgical site infection was highly variable.
