The risk of death in a residential fire is affected by factors which determine if the person is able to escape successfully.
Study population: People dying or surviving residential fires in North Carolina over a 1 year period.
High vulnerability group:
(1) person home alone
(2) age younger than 5 years of age, or 64 years or older
(3) physical or cognitive disability present
(4) impaired by alcohol or other drug
Factors lowering risk of death in fire:
(1) presence of an adult with no physical or cognitive disabilities and who was not impaired by drugs or alcohol
(2) presence of smoke detector if in the high vulnerability group
