Description

An older adult with cryptosporidiosis may be at risk for prolonged hospitalization or death.

Factors associated with a worse outcome:

(1) older age, with increased mortality if >= 85 years of age

(2) immunocompromised, including HIV disease

(3) severe volume depletion (dehydration)

Additional factors:

(1) significant comorbid conditions made worse by any degree of dehydration or volume depletion (heart failure, chronic renal failure, etc)

(2) concurrent medications with increased adverse effects if dehydrated

(3) delay in diagnosis or in appropriate management

(4) concurrent conditions contributing to dehydration or volume depletion, such as hot weather or vomiting
