Description

Yogaraj et al identified risk factors for bloodstream infection in a patient in the pediatric intensive care unit (ICU). These can help identify patients who may benefit from closer monitoring and preventive measures. The authors are from Washington University in St. Louis.

6.2% of 911 patients developed one or more primary bloodstream infections while in the ICU.

Risk factors for a bloodstream infection:

(1) multiple venous catheters

(2) an arterial catheter

(3) invasive procedure performed while in the ICU

(4) transport of the patient from the ICU to the operating room or radiology

where:

• The odds ratios range from 3.4 to 5.7.

• I am not sure if the risk increases for each invasive procedure in the ICU or transport out of the unit.

Avoiding or limiting risk factors should reduce the number of primary bloodstream infections.
