Description

Tiruvoipati et al evaluated neonates with congenital diaphragmatic hernia who required extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy. They identified risk factors for mortality in these patients. The authors are from Glenfield Hospital and the University of Nottingham in England.

Overall mortality rate: 42%

Parameters evaluated on multivariate analysis:

(1) duration of ECMO therapy

(2) renal complications requiring continuous venovenous hemofiltration

where:

• The need for ECMO for 2 or more weeks was associated with significant pulmonary hypoplasia.

= SUM(points for both parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum number of risk factors: 0

• maximum number of risk factors: 2

• The more risk factors present the greater the risk of mortality.
