Soubassi et al identified a number of risk factors associated with coronary artery disease in an older adult undergoing hemodialysis. These factors can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Hygeia Hospital in Athens.
Patient selection: older adult > 65 years on hemodialysis
Risk factors associated with coronary artery disease:
(1) male gender
(2) diabetes
(3) secondary hyperparathyroidism
(4) hypertension
(5) smoking
(6) elevated blood homocysteine concentrations
(7) elevated serum C-reactive protein (CRP)
(8) hemodialysis for longer period (several years)
(9) inadequate hemodialysis
where:
• The relative risk for the factors ranged from 1.7 to 2.3.
Interpretation:
• minimum number of risk factors: 0
• maximum number of risk factors: 9
• The risk increases with the number of risk factors.
