Sims et al listed risk factors associated with diabetic foot. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Pennsylvania State University.


 

Patient selection: diabetes mellitus

 

Risk factors for diabetic foot:

(1) loss of protective senses such as pain

(2) high pressure on plantar surfaces

(3) autonomic neuropathy

(4) history of previous ulcer or amputation

(5) foot deformity

(6) neuropathic fracture

(7) abnormal foot function

(8) high activity level

(9) peripheral vascular disease

(10) inadequate foot care

(11) improper footware

(12) loss of vision

(13) poor diabetic control
