Description

Schwartz et al identified risk factors for amblyopia (reduced visual acuity) in a child with a capillary hemangioma of the orbit or eyelid. The authors are from North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health Systems in New York.

A hemangioma of the orbit or eyelid can cause amblyopia due to:

(1) strabismus

(2) ptosis

(3) proptosis

(4) globe displacement

(5) pupillary occlusion

(6) anisometropic amblyopia

(7) lid margin changes

Risk factors for amblyopia:

(1) an hemangioma measuring more than 1 cm in diameter

(2) diffuse hemangioma

(3) PHACES syndrome (posterior fossa brain malformaion, hemangioma, cardiac anomalies, coarctation of the aorta, eye anomalies, sternal cleft)
