Description

Sasaki et al identified a number of risk factors for erectile dysfunction in Japanese males with diabetes mellitus. These can help identify patients who may benefit from pharmacologic therapy. The authors are from Wakayama Medical University, Juntendo University, Tokyo Women's Medical School of Medicine, Saitama Medical School and Toho University.

Major risk factor:

(1) age in years (odds ratio 1 in 40's, 2 in 50's, 4.5 in 60's, 12.6 in 70's)

Minor risk factors (odds ratio from 1.3 to 2.0)

(2) insulin therapy

(3) microangiopathy

(4) diabetic vascular complications (hypertension, history of cerebrovascular disease and/or history of cardiovascular disease)

(5) leg dysesthesia (numbness and/or discomfort in toes, soles, feet)

(6) dysuria (slow urine flow, takes time to urinate)

(7) insomnia, sleep disturbance

(8) anorexia, loss of appetite

The risk of erectile dysfunction increases with the number of risk factors present.
