Description

Opisthorchis species cause liver fluke infection in humans. Rangsin et al identified risk factors for Opisthorchis infection in rural Thailand where it is a major public health concern. The authors are from Phramongkutklao College of Medicine in Bangkok.

Major risk factors for infection:

(1) eating fresh, chopped raw fish salad (Koi pla), with risk increasing with frequency of eating

(2) age > 60 years

There was a low risk when eating:

(1) thoroughly cooked fish dishes

(2) fermented raw fish stored in brine (risk decreases with longer storage and higher salt concentration)
