Description

Osberg et al studied factors associated with work and financial problems in families with a child suffering brain injury. These factors can help identify those families which may need additional resources to cope with the immediate complications and rehabilitation. The authors are from Tufts University and the Shriners Burn Institute in Boston.

Predictors of financial problems:

(1) severe injury (Injury Severity Score 20 – 75)

(2) >= 4 impairments

(3) cognitive problems

(4) behavioral problems

(5) length of hospital stay >= 15 days

(6) discharged to hospital or rehabilitation center

(7) motor vehicle-related injury

Factors reducing risk of financial problems:

(1) higher socioeconomic status

(2) belonging to an HMO

Predictors of work-related problems:

(1) moderate to severe injury (Injury Severity Score 10 to 75)

(2) >= 2 impairments

(3) cognitive problems

(4) behavioral problems

(5) length of hospital stay >= 5 days

(6) discharged to hospital or rehabilitation center

(7) motor vehicle-related injury

Some of the overlap between financial and work-related problems is that parents will reduce the amount of work performed to visit or care for the child.
