Description

Oliviera et al evaluated patients with visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar) in Brazil. They identified a number of risk factors associated with acute kidney injury (AKI) and death. The authors are from the Federal University of Ceara and University of Fortaleza in Brazil.

The primary risk factor for acute kidney injury was therapy with amphotericin B.

Additional factors associated with acute kidney injury were:

(1) male gender

(2) older age (age >= 50 will be used in the implementation)

(3) jaundice

Risk factors for death were associated with multi-organ failures:

(1) acute kidney injury with oliguria

(2) acute respiratory failure with dyspnea

(3) jaundice (? hepatic failure)
