Description

Nybaek et al evaluated ostomy patients for skin problems and identified risk factors for their occurrence. Some skin problems can be avoided by more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Copenhagen, Roskilde Hospital and Bispebjerg Hospital in Denmark.

Patient selection: ostomy

Skin lesions observed included:

(1) fecal dermatitis

(2) mechanical dermatitis

(3) allergic contact dermatitis

(4) folliculitis

(5) psoriasis

(6) nummular eczema

(7) pyoderma gangrenosum

(8) fissures

Patients often underreported or were unaware of skin problems. The sites should be regularly observed by trained clinicians.

Risk factors for skin problems:

(1) ileostomy

(2) ostomy with leakage

(3) body mass index > 30 kg per square meter

A patient with history of skin problems or poor compliance might also be at risk.
