Description

Mohammadi et al identified risk factors for moderate to severe depression in a woman with multiple sclerosis (MS). These can help to identify a woman who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Science and Culture, ACECR, in Tehran.

Patient selection: woman with multiple sclerosis

Risk factors for depression:

(1) relapsing-remitting MS (vs primary or secondary progressive)

(2) severe disability based on the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS)

(3) employment status (housewife = not employed)

where:

• The issue of employment either relates to the woman being a housewife or not being employed. Not being able to work suggests greater disability.

The risk of depression increases with the number of risk factors present.
