Luthi and Schalgenhauf identified risk factors for a travler dying of malaria. These can help to identify a traveler who may be at increased risk and who may benefit from early intervention. The authors are from the University of Zurich.
Patient selection: traveler with malaria
Outcome: death from malaria
Risk factors related to the patient:
(1) age > 50 years
(2) male gender
(3) non-immunity
(4) traveling as a tourist (not visiting friends and relatives)
(5) pregnancy
Risk factors related to malaria:
(1) infection with Plasmodium falciparum
Risk factors related to the illness:
(1) chemoprophylaxis either not used or used inappropriately
(2) delay in seeking care
(3) delay in diagnosis
(4) incorrect treatment
