Description

Laxenaire et al identified certain risk factors associated with histamine release in patients undergoing anesthesia. This can help identify patients who may benefit from closer monitoring and preventive care. The authors are from Hopital Central in Nancy, France.

Risk factors for histamine release during anesthesia:

(1) female gender

(2) age 15 to 25 years

(3) history of allergy

(4) history of undergoing multiple anesthetic inductions, especially over a short period of time

(5) exaggerated anxiety pre-anesthesia

(6) exposure to drugs associated with histamine release

Looking at these, items 1 and 2 may be weak predictors. Other authors have found geriatric patients have a higher risk.

NOTE: For the implementation I have added an additional risk factor for a previous history of a histamine release reaction.
