Description

Karassa et al identified factors affecting the risk of central nervous system (CNS) involvement associated with systemic lupus erythematosus. A patient at high risk may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the National University of Athens in Greece.

CNS involvement in SLE may include both neurologic findings and psychiatric disorders.

Factors associated with an increased risk for CNS involvement:

(1) history of arterial thrombosis in association with the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS)

(2) history of cutaneous vasculitis

Factors associated with a decreased risk for CNS involvement:

(1) presence of arthritis and/or arthralgias

(2) history of discoid skin rash
