Description

Holtta et al evaluated risk factors for abnormal root development of permanent teeth in pediatric patients undergoing stem cell transplantation (SCT). These factors can help identify children who may require closer monitoring and more aggressive management for dental abnormalities as they become older. The authors are from the University of Helsinki in Finland.

Patient selection: age < 10 years of age at time of stem cell transplantation

Parameters:

(1) high dose chemotherapy

(2) total body irradiation

(3) age when stem cell transplantation performed

Interpretation:

• minimum number of risk factors: 0

• maximum number of risk factors: 3

• Children undergoing stem cell transplantation are at risk for disturbed root development of the permanent teeth. The severity of the abnormal root development increases as the number of risk factors increases.
