A major fracture was defined as a fracture requiring reduction in the Emergency Department or in an operating room.
Most major fractures occurring on a playground:
(1) involve an upper extremity
(2) tend to occur in a child from 5 to 9 years of age
(3) are associated with a fall from playground equipment
Equipment associated with major fractures:
(1) monkey bars, jungle gyms or the like
(2) seesaws
(3) slides
(4) swings
Trampolines were not included as standard playground equipment but are associated with many kinds of injuries.
Ways to reduce injuries:
(1) Monitor the playground to prevent excessive horseplay or risk taking.
(2) Remove any structures near play equipment that may contribute to a fracture.
(3) Provide an impact absorbing surface beneath and about all play equipment.
(4) Make sure that all equipment is properly maintained.
(5) Report and track all injuries on the playground. Any rise in injuries should prompt an investigation as to the cause.
