Description

Fallat et al identified risk factors for pediatric injury. These can help identify a child who should be targeted for interventions to reduce injury. The authors are from the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky.


 

Risk factors for pediatric injury:

(1) poverty

(2) frequent moves of the family household

(3) child abuse

(4) child neglect

(5) single parent household

(6) multiple siblings

(7) overcrowding at home

(8) poor maternal health (physical and/or mental)

(9) marital discord

(10) hyperactivity and/or impulsivity

(11) aggressive personality

(12) violent or hazardous environment (

(13) lack of safe recreational facilities

(14) substandard housing

(15) access to guns, knives or other weapons

(16) poor levels of education

 

Other factors not listed by the authors:

(1) poor supervision

(2) drug or alcohol abuse at home

(3) drug, alcohol or inhalant abuse by the child

(4) risk taking and thrill seeking behaviors

(5) boredom
