Risk factors for infection with a Campylobacter species that is resistant to fluoroquinolones:

(1) acquired during international travel

(2) history of therapy with fluoroquinolone or other antibiotic prior to the exposure

(3) exposure to animals treated with antibiotics

(4) eating chicken or turkey at a restaurant ("commercial establishment")

where:

• Eating chicken or turkey at a restaurant may be due to use of fowl raised with antibiotics or spread through the distribution chain.

A patient with a Campylobacter infection and one or more risk factors should have the isolate screened for fluoroquinolone resistance.
