Description

Dire et al identified a number of risk factors associated with infection following a dog bite. These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Oklahoma.

Patient selection: dog bite

Best predictors for wound infection from stepwise logistic regression analysis:

(1) full-thickness wound (versus partial thickness or puncture)

(2) female gender

(3) need for surgical wound debridement

Additional risk factors:

(1) age > 50 years (infection rate 6 times that of those <= 50 years of age)
