Description

Chow et al identified risk factors for sudden death in a patient undergoing peritoneal dialysis. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the Prince of Wales Hospital and Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Patient selection: peritoneal dialysis

Risk factors for sudden death:

(1) blood transfusion within the past year (odds ratio 5.2)

(2) male gender (odds ratio 4.2)

(3) diabetes mellitus (odds ratio 5.3)

Drugs that may prolong the QT interval should be used with caution in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis.
